A passenger bus has tragically died in the mountainous state of Alagoas, Brazil, after it plunged into a ravine. The accident occurred on a mountain road near the city of União dos Palmares in the state on Sunday (November 24).

The state government said in a statement that the bus fell off a mountain road and into a ravine. Rescuers said 22 people died on the spot. A pregnant woman died after being taken to hospital with injuries.

There were 40 passengers on the bus. Several other people on the bus were injured in the accident, according to various Brazilian media reports. Alagoas Governor Paulo Dantas has declared three days of mourning following the casualties.
